PREFACIO

El Mundo Oculto fué publicado por primera vez en
1881. El objeto de que trata ha provocado desptués un
extenso movimiento del pensamiento en el Mundo.
Enconadas controversias se empeñaron sobre la
personalidad que es la razón de ser de la obra. El crédito
de madame Blavatsky, demostradora de fenómenos, fué,
a los ojos de los observadores superficiales, seriamente
quebrantado por un agente de la Sociedad de
Investigaciones Psíquicas de Londres, quien, encargado de
hacer un informe sobre los hechos que habían tenido lugar
en Madrás, no vaciló en lanzar contra ella imputaciones
injuriosas y apasionadas. Hay que advertir que los hechos
de Madrás no tienen conexión alguna con los que
se relatan en esta obra.

A su vez, el informe del agente fué formalmente
desmentido. Sólo hago alusión a estos borrascosos
debates para manifestar que en nada atañen al carácter de
mi exposición; todo el que ha atacado a Mad. Blavatsky
en su carácter de obrera oculta, ha tenido el cuidado de
basarse en pretendidos actos cumplidos sin relación con
aquellos que describo.

En cuanto a algunas críticas retrospectivas dirigidas
contra varios casos citados en este libro en la época
en que el informe antes citado fué publicado, me limito
a recordar que he respondido a ellos en un folleto titulado

CHILDHOOD
QUOTING the authoritative statement of her late uncle,
General Fadeef, made at my request in 1881, at a time
when he was Joint-Secretary of State in the Home
Department at St Petersburg, Mme. H. P. Blavatsky
(Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, to give the name at full
length) "is, from her father's side, the daughter of
Colonel Peter Hahn, and granddaughter of General
Alexis Hahn von Rottenstern Hahn (a noble family of
Mecklenburg, Germany, settled in Russia); and she is,
from her mother's side, the daughter of Helene Fadeef,
and granddaughter of Privy Councillor Andrew Fadeef
and of the Princess Helene Dolgorouky. She is the
widow of the Councillor of State, Nicephore Blavatsky,
late Vice-Governor of the Province of Erivan, Caucasus."

Mdlle. Hahn, to use her family name in referring to
her childhood, was born at Ekaterinoslaw, in the south
of Russia, in 1831. Von Hahn would be the proper
German form of the name, and in French writing or
conversation the name, as used by Russians, would be
De Hahn, but in its strictly Russian form the preflx

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

THE teachings embodied in the present
volume let in a flood of light on questions
connected with Buddhist doctrine which have
deeply perplexed previous writers on that
religion, and offer the world for the first time a
practical clue to the meaning of almost all
ancient religious symbolism.

More than this, the esoteric doctrine, when
properly understood, will be found to advance an
overpowering claim on the attention of earnest
thinkers.Its tenets are not presented to us as the
invention of any founder or prophet; its 'testimony
is based on no written scriptures; its
views of Nature have been evolved by the
researches of an immense succession of
investigators, qualified for their task by the possession
