- Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and educated at Mills College, California, Marjorie Sinclair came to Hawai'i in 1935. She quickly entered into the life of the Islands, studying Chinese and Japanese, and learning the hula from 'Iolani Luahine. From 1955 until 1980, she taught in the Department of English of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. She has published poetry, novels, short stories, and translations, as well as a biography of Nahi'ena'ena, the daughter of Kamehameha I.
