If you enjoy exercising your wits, this treasury of intriguing puzzles, ranging from moderately challenging to maddeningly difficult, will give your problem-solving skills a rigorous workout. Each puzzle involves an absorbing "moment of truth" decision problem in games of skill, games of chance, games conventional and unconventional, games bizarre and many more.
The book is divided into two sections. The first consists of 80 solved game problems, including bridge, chess and checker problems, map games, word games, problems in game theory, countdown and countup games, ""life games"" and much more. Part Two contains 20 unsolved games -- Regulus, Quadraphage, Loaded Dice, Peek-A-Boo, Prime Ghost, Semi-Blind Poker, and others -- calculated to test the solving skills of even the most battle-hardened gamester. Diligent readers will also find many other unsolved ""challenge problems"" posed in the solutions to the solved problems and in the section entitled Notes and Sources.
Although a flair for mathematics will be helpful in solving a number of these problems, most of the games in this book require only the exercise of logic and ingenuity. In addition, over 100 red-and-black illustrations (the two colos actually play a part in some of the puzzles) help clarify the problems and make the book come alive. The result is a compendium of carefully contrived conundrums that offers hours of enjoyable and stimulating entertainment to puzzle buffs at all levels of expertise.
