Courte biographie
Dong-il Sheen was born in Seoul, Korea. He was described as “a quiet revolutionary who broke the barrier of classical music” (Culture and Me magazine 2006). In a 2002 article in the New Music Composition and Critics journal, Professor Young-Han Heo of the Korean National University of Arts wrote, “Dong-il Sheen is a composer who filled the huge void in our lives with a new style of creative music. He explored music style that was ignored by other composers and now firmly established his own style.”

Mr. Sheen has been active in writing music in many different styles, including western European music, traditional Korean music, children’s music, film soundtracks, and musicals. He graduated Seoul National University and received his Master’s degree at the New York University Graduate School of Music. He collaborated with pianist Jung Hee Han in the album Blue Bicycle, which later received a critical acclaim. He started the new style music movement “Han-ma-dang” and “Music Composers-ma-dang.”

In 2002, Mr. Sheen collaborated with writer-illustrator Jae-soo Liu in the CD-Book Yellow Umbrella, which was named as one of the 10 best illustrated books by the New York Times. Japanese pianist Takako Takahashi made a CD of Mr. Sheen’s music in Japan.

He received numerous awards including the Best Young Artists of the Year award from the Korean Ministry of Culture & Tourism in 2003, and the Grand Prize of the Year in composers and conductors categories from the Korean Broadcasting Service (KBS) in 2004.

Mr. Sheen is a board member of the Association of Korean Musicians, President of the Composer’s Association (Jahk-gok-ma-dang), and Co-president of the Children’s Arts Production. Currently he is a lecturer at the Korean National University of Arts and Seoul National University Graduate School of Music.

This one was okay. I liked the accompanying music and how it makes you focus on the art in the book. The Korean song that goes with it added to the appeal of the book, and overall I think kids would enjoy looking at the pictures and imagining who might be beneath the umbrellas.

The illustrations in this book are very simply, set very beautiful. The book is filled with mostly dulled hues of blues and grays. The first umbrella seen is yellow and very clearly stands out against the background. As the reader goes on, another umbrella is added. This time it is bright blue. And then a red, each time adding a new umbrella with a new color. Also, as more and more umbrellas are added, I could notice there were more and more raindrops in the setting of the book though the pictures. the raindrops were making waves in the puddles. The umbrellas look to being going through the town. It had a water color feel to it. This story would be good for students with counting, but also just finding the umbrellas against a background in the story. Also, a fun activity with this would be for students to create their own sceneries with brightly colored objects.… (plus d'informations)

This is a wonderfully unique wordless book of children walking to school in the rain that is beautifully combined with music composed specifically with the illustrations. This is such a fresh and different perspective about a common event, walking with an umbrella in the rain. The watercolor illustrations are beautiful. There are multiple songs on the CD that compliment the story that children can listen to while reading the book or reflecting on the book.

This is a great book to stimulate children to think about common events in a fresh and different way; to encourage multiple perspectives. I love the combination of music and reading and it would be a fresh addition to a unit about colors, rain, school, connections, differences and similarities. Would also be a great conversation starter about how music invokes emotion and feelings and discuss the ways in which that occurs.… (plus d'informations)

Pretty even without the CD. Lyrics and sheet music are at the back of the book.
