Carolina Setterwall

Carolina und Aksel lieben sich und haben eine kleine Tochter. Sie ist mit ihrem Baby überfordert. Als Carolina dann eine Mail von Aksel erhält mit dem Betreff „Falls ich sterbe“, ist sie aufgebracht. Einige Monate später ist Aksel tot. Carolina ist geschockt und muss sich mit dem Verlust und ihrer Trauer auseinandersetzen.
Wir begleiten Carolina, die sich zurückerinnert und ihre Beziehung zu Aksel betrachtet. Sie erinnert sich an das Kennenlernen, an die erste Zeit ihrer Beziehung und an das Elternwerden. und wie es zu ihrer Beziehung kam, wie sie Eltern wurden. Wir erfahren aber auch, wie sie sich nach dem Tod von Aksel fühlt.
Mir war Carolina nicht besonders sympathisch. Sie ist dominant und war immer die treibende Kraft. So kam es zur Beziehung und zum Baby. Aksel wurde regelrecht überfahren. Aber er wollte alles gut machen und ist dabei an seine Grenzen gestoßen. Carolina kreist immer um sich selbst. Ich konnte nicht mit ihr fühlen, nicht in der Zeit der Trauer und auch nicht, als sie wieder jemanden kennenlernt, der nicht so geduldig alles mit sich machen lässt wie Aksel, sondern eher das Gegenteil.
Die Geschichte, die aus Carolinas Sicht erzählt wird, ist ziemlich ehrlich und so wird ihr Charakter gut beleuchtet. Aber mich hat diese recht dunkle Geschichte nicht überzeugt.… (plus d'informations)

I read this book after I heard a rather positive review on an Australian radio book show. Apparently it is strongly based on the author's experience of the sudden death of her partner when their child was an infant, although it's not memoir as such. Nonetheless, it reads as a memoir and the believability of the writing makes for a convincing story. I know from my own experience that it's tough to be the parent of a young infant, but if you have to manage that on your own AND you're grieving the unexplained and unexpected death of your partner with whom you have only had a short relationship, it's got to be one of the more stressful life experiences for a modern western person. I found a particular interest in the way she negotiated with her partner and family, and how the incredibly strong support she had from her community was actually a mixed blessing. She was especially challenged to find a way of moving forward while retaining a respect for her relationship with her dead partner. Despite the sadness this isn't the weepy you might imagine it could be and I don't think Carolina Setterwall attempted to manipulate the reader's emotions at all.… (plus d'informations)
