This book contains lots of practical advice for teaching media literacy, from general approach through discussion, active participation and supporting young people into participants in the media and not just consumers of it to examples of tasks and projects to try out. As I don't have any immediate need for such practical advice, it was very interesting, but I would have been more interested in more theory.

Beyond Media Literacy is a short, helpful handbook for instructors wishing to design assignments and projects for students. The suggested activities generally fall into two overlapping categories: the analysis of how the media influences our lives and the hands-on creation of media. Some of the activities fall on the analytical end of that spectrum, though the majorities involve asking the students take on a creative role in some form. Colin Scheyen presents a new paradigm for media literacy teachers. Most teachers use the producer/consumer paradigm. However, with social media, we are not only consumers, we are producers of media. He then gives sample projects for students and additional resources for teachers.
