Courte biographie
Edith Scannell (1852-1940) was a British painter and book illustrator, largely known for her depictions of young children, and for her work in collaboration with her sister, the children's author Florence Scannell. She first studied art in Paris, under M. Jacquand, and submitted her first painting, 'Bible-reading in Switzerland in the Eighteenth Century,' to the Royal Academy in London, where it was hung. She also studied in Florence, Rome and Pisa, under Bellucci, Bompiani and Lanfredini, and for a short time at the Slade School in London. She lived for many years with her mother and sister in West Kensington, London, but gained her first credited illustrative commissions from American publishers.
