- Kitty (Kati) Salsberg and her younger sister Ellen (Ilonka) were born to an impoverished Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary.
In 1940, during World War II, their father was conscripted into the
Hungarian Army and died two years later. Their mother was deported by the Nazis to the concentration camp at Dachau, where she died.
The two young sisters survived after an uncle managed to place them in a Red Cross safe house. The Budapest Ghetto was liberated by the Red Army in January 1945, when Kati was 12 years old and her sister was 10. They were reunited with maternal relatives, but Kati wanted to leave Hungary. In 1948, the girls emigrated to Canada through the Canadian Jewish Congress's War Orphans Project, settling in Toronto. Kitty graduated from a teachers’ college in 1954 and later earned a her master’s in education. She married
another teacher, with whom she had four children. Ellen Foster trained as a secretary and in 1952 moved to Los Angeles, California where she married and also had four children. Their joint memoir, Never Far Apart, was published in 2015 as part of The Azrieli Foundation Series of Holocaust Survivor Memoirs.
