A little duckling is excited to find a book, but disappointed (and a little angry) to discover it has no pictures. On closer inspection, though, the ducking can read some of the words, and the white space becomes populated with different landscapes, creatures, and things. "All these words carry you away...and then...they bring you home...where they stay with you forever." The duckling (and insect friend) wind up back home in bed, clutching the book.

This works well as an early reader. The illustrations give clues to deciphering the printed text. There are only a few words on each page. The story is charming and funny, worth reading more than once.

My daughter and nephew (both four years old) enjoyed trying to guess what the text said based on the pictures and laughed at the increasing absurdity of the story.

Cute!

The goofy characters in these books remind me of Elephant and Piggy books by Mo Willems. This beginning chapter book has the fun characters of Fox and Chick. They are good friends and experience things that friends do, planning activities together, working out problems, and being kind to one another.
