Frank Russell

I was excited to read this book about the history of Malden, Massachusetts. Unfortunately, I ended up disappointed. While the rare photographs are a true treasure, the writing is merely a dry statement of facts, akin to a history book. Even with my interest in local history, I found this hard to get through.

The author clearly had multiple resources at his disposal, but skims over all events without adding any depth to them. For example, "Slavery was largely abolished in Massachusetts in 1783 by the Quock Walker case." End of chapter. I could do with knowing about a bit more about this Walker case!
