Three 11-year-old girls from very different backgrounds become close friends. As they grow up and become adults, they continue to be close. The 'present-day' part of the story involves a crisis for one of them, and a planned get-together with the other two, which happens later in the book.

The past is revealed in cleverly written flashbacks, which form the bulk of the story, and we gradually discover why the current crisis is causing such immense stress, and where the title of the book comes from. The central event, when it happens, is sensitively written and somehow manages to avoid being sordid.

Recommended if you like women's fiction with well-rounded characters and a hard-hitting storyline.

Set at the end of the 19th century, this is about Rebecca, whose in-laws disapprove of her. It's a family type novel, with ongoing situations rather than a clear plot, and several rather caricatured people. However I liked Rebecca, and it was overall a pleasant read.

Tessa and Maddy are peacefully drinking coffee, when a chance remark turns Tessa's world upside-down. The book follows her thoughts as she decides what to do, as well as following the lives of local folk in the village. Very moving with a little humour now and again. Recommended.

A character based family novel, seeing children grow up; not much plot, but lovely main characters, and mildly amusing caricatures of the minor ones. Overall, very enjoyable.
