Columbus and Caonabo is a very comprehensive novel about the man we were all taught “discovered” America. Of course as we learned later in life there was nothing to really discover – the lands he found had been peopled all along. Plus, others had come long before Mr. Columbus but he did play a huge part in the history of the Americas. Whether you see that part as good or bad is not what is to be debated here.

Mr. Rowan obviously did a lot of research into the times and the peoples that inhabit his story. That is very evident from the detail evident throughout the story. The dialog he uses for his characters is not as effective but it does move the story along.

I did not read this book all in one sitting. It was a book that I would pick up between other books and read a chapter here and a couple of chapters there. That worked very well for me and so I was able to appreciate the story without having to feel like I had to read the book all at once. I was able to hold on to the story line very well and maybe that’s the best way to read a book such as this. To each his/her own I suppose.

If you love history (and I do) and want to learn more about Columbus and Caonabo this book would be one to add to your shelf. I have found that reading historical fiction can lead to learning – I end up researching things I find in the books and I then learn even more.

This was a brilliant piece of historical fiction. Are you looking to not just step through to the past, but to learn more about the people who are involved in that piece of history, then look no further. Especially in the American school system, we're given a simplistic, whitewashed history when it comes to Columbus. This gives us insight not just into the key players, but their lives, their cultures, the things that shaped them. A great read that will keep you engaged for hours.

A brilliant look into history (though fictional), Encounters Unforeseen presents what's often overlooked in history books. The little things that ultimately impact the larger parts of history. Cannot recommend enough.
