"Learning is not what most people think"

And that is how the book prepares its audience, the central theme is learning the right way ("right way" meaning supported by empirical studies).

Some of the advice may be taken as common sense, some not, but the overall structure of the book follows a thoughtful structure, prepending each chapter with visual examples to make sure the information sticks in the reader's mind.

Following in the research's footsteps, the author structured the book accordingly. The topics presented are interleaved, and early subjects are reviewed again in later chapters.

The book finishes with a more hands-on chapter, summarising and referencing earlier chapters for more in-depth details.
Of interest, the reader may also find various use cases from real-world businesses and learners that have successfully applied research-based ways of learning.

I would have liked to have more practical examples, tools, and techniques for mastering my memory, nonetheless, the book was satisfactory as it was. The overall impression the book left me was of a layman's instruction manual into human memory, redirecting readers interested in more advanced and practical applications to additional reading.

Whoa! I would have rated this book 10/5. This is a book that I will read, reflect upon, reread, and write an extensive notes about. Highly recommend this book to anyone who is obsessed with mastery.

A very profound book. Even though it's not as recent anymore, it goes into many concepts beneficial to learning that correlate with what I know of Cognitive Psychology. It does this without going into too much empirical proof, making it an excellent read for students and people who are just getting started to improve their learning efficiency.
Some of the concepts it goes into:
- Importance of self-testing
- Importance of reflection
- Spacing of practice
- Interleaving & Varied practice
- Elaboration as a manner of quality encoding
