In the wake of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, Isabel is a sheltered society girl, largely ignored by her socialite mother (who only cares that she keeps her dress clean) and her sculptor father (who gets caught up in his work). But it turns out the earthquake wasn't just a natural disaster; it was partly the result of a war between the Seelie and Unseelie, and Isabel gets caught up in the conflict. She finds help from a thief named Benjie and a Seelie called Button, and together they work to return a powerful necklace to the Seelie princess.

Plot Summary: Bix is responsible for taking care of her younger sister, which is always hard, but when their underground society discusses leaving due to the frequency of dangerous earthquakes, Pella runs away to the enchanted forest, where no one has ever returned. Bix doesn't want to go. She is scared of everything, but love and fear keep her moving closer to her sister. Will she find her? Will they return safely to their society?

Setting: made up

Characters:
Bix - older sister, worried, timid, caregiver for Pella
Pella - younger sister, adventurous, loud, not afraid
Cici - friend from the forest

Recurring Themes: adventure, facing fear, friendship, challenge, destruction, good vs. evil, sibling rivalry

Controversial Issues: none

Personal Thoughts: This graphic novel had enough heart and adventure to keep me engaged. It can be read quickly so just the main themes come across (good vs. evil, facing fear, etc) or deeper to get the details of how the two sets of sisters can be the same and different.

Genre: fantasy

Pacing: fast, graphic novel
Characters: very few, well developed
