The biography of the abolitionist who worked with William Lloyd Garrison, Abby Kelley Foster, Stephen S. Foster and other well known northern abolitionists. Unfortunately Pillsbury, probably the most radical and determined of them all, has been forgotten in the history of the movement. He spent his entire life on the road, speaking about slavery, and later the woman's movement, labor, public health and moral issues. He was often ostracized by others in the movement for his unwavering views, particularly against established religions which he felt belied all these ills. He also worked with Stanton and Anthony and was editor of their newspaper The Revolution.
The author brings him to life, showing the reader how determined and single-minded he was, to the detriment of his own health and his family life. He was willing to buck the leaders of the movements to which he belonged when he felt they were morally wrong which is very clear in the text. Working from his voluminous letters and his book Acts of the Anti-Slavery Apostles the author does an admirable job explaining Pillsbury's perfectionist views on these issues. Highly recommended for students of the abolitionist and suffrage movements of the mid-19th century.
