For all that I have a professed interest in Penguin books, I did not know that Edinburgh University is the place to go to see the biggest collection of first editions.

This unlikely scenario, Edinburgh being about as far from Exeter (where the books were first conceived) as it is possible to get within the British Isles; came about because a gentleman bearing the name Kenneth Ryrie bequeathed his library to the university. Mr. Ryrie had a healthy collection of Penguin books, many in their first Penguin edition and so, a collection was formed.
