Current models of instruction often fail students by lacking any coherent approach to the order, scope, and depth of concept introduction, reinforcement, and mastery. Ritter et al. have compiled a sequence of essays that examine the role of sequence and explores models of cognitive comprehension that positively impact learning. The chapters themselves are sequenced in a manner that empowers the reader to engage the range of topics included in the book according to their own interests and needs. While the book is at times a difficult read for me, I do find insights in the use of alternative instructional models that can be applicable for educators at the college level. This reading, combined with some examination of brain-based learning, will hopefully bear a replicable model for reaching more students by rearranging how we approach curriculum.
