A competently written book, covering all aspects of the demographic trends and problems and prospects of family planning among Muslims in India. The author, a highly respected administrator, former Chief Election Commissioner, has marshaled the relevant data on population growth, polygamy, fertility etc. among different social and faith classes, and shows that both Muslims and Hindus are more or less similarly reducing their fertility and growth rates, with Hindus slightly better off on the spectrum, but not by much. He demonstrates that more than religion, it is social development (literacy, education especially of girls, access to health services and basic needs, age at marriage, etc.) that determine fertility and growth of numbers. He makes a cogent case for improving the socio-economic conditions of Muslims, reaching family planning and welfare information and services to hem through their own agents and respected persons, and removing the general prejudices against family control among Muslims, as well adverse impressions of Muslim growth rates among the majority community.… (plus d'informations)
