My original plan was not to rate this book until I had completed the carving exercises. However, given the pace at which I carve, the book my crumble into dust before I got that far. But I feel confident enough that I have a sense of how well Pye guides one through a project that I'm rating it now. Where this book excelled was in its introductory material covering tools and techniques. (It was so good, that it lead me to buy Pye's 2-volume set [b:Woodcarving Tools, Material & Equipment: Volume 1|1143226|Woodcarving Tools, Material & Equipment Volume 1|Chris Pye|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1411948334l/1143226._SX50_.jpg|1130667] and [b:Woodcarving: Tools, Materials & Equipment Volume 2|2350048|Woodcarving Tools, Materials & Equipment Volume 1|Chris Pye|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1411951263l/2350048._SX50_.jpg|2356759]). The carving projects are clearly described, well illustrated/photographed, and easy to follow.… (plus d'informations)

There is so much good information here, things that other woodcarving books don't focus on (designing/drawing/modeling, modifying tools, bench discipline), or covered to a depth other books don't aspire to (holding devices, finishing). The pictures are colorful, clear, and up-close. The illustrations helpful.
(BTW, this actually Volume 2. See the cover image. Somehow Goodreads has screwed up the metadata on the book.)

There is so much good information here, things that are covered to a depth other books don't aspire to. There are over 100 pages dedicated to the subject of sharpening alone. The information on tool construction and how to evaluate them is unequaled. The pictures are colorful, clear, and up-close. The illustrations helpful. I doubt this and the 2nd volume will rest on a shelf. They'll be kept near my workbench so as to be grabbed quickly.

This is an excellent introduction to the tools of woodcarving include the odd numbering system and the weird bent tools. Lots of advice for sharpening and setup new tools.
