- After getting his degree in 1918, he fought in the Russian Civil War on the White side and was evacuated to Turkey with Wrangel's forces in 1920. The next year he moved to Prague, where he taught at the Russian university until WWII; from 1945 to 1949 he lived with other refugees in transit camps, teaching Russian children, and in 1949 he moved to the USA, where he taught Russian at Yale, retiring in 1953 but continuing his historical studies until 1976.
