TRANSLATED FROM THE RUSSIAN BY V. VEZEY
Opening: THE PICTURE GALLERY constitutes the Hermitage’s principal section, as also the oldest in point of time. It came into being with the acquisition, in 1764, of 225 paintings by Western European masters from the Berlin merchant Gotzkowsky. Over the next two centuries the Museum’s collection increased to 8,000 pictures.
The Lute Player (Caravaggio)
The writing is rather stilted, however who doesn't know about The Hermitage, up the stairs there in The Winter Palace on the banks of the Neva. M and I spent a whole day there and we still didn't feel that we had our fill.
Half the images in this book are only in black and white, yet with the interwebz to hand it is easy enough to bring up the full coloured glory of each work.
