It's the story of Kelly and Josie. Josie owns a resort on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan that she is trying to turn into a lesbian resort. At the same time she's also trying to take care of her grandmother too, who seems to be in declining health.

Kelly is an Elder nurse who, along with her friends, are some of Josie's first guests. She and Kelly are immediately attracted to each other. But, while Kelly wants to settle down, it doesn't seem like Josie wants to. And then Barb, a conservation officer enters the scene, wanting to woo Kelly.

There's also what was supposed to be a sort of thriller type sub-plot I think about a man wanting to buy the property, but, there were so many things that I assumed were going to happen. Twists that I wanted to see, that never even came close to happening, making it sort of a flat thriller/mystery.

I wish I'd liked the book more. The main story line at times seemed interesting, and I loved the character of Ruth, Josie's grandmother too. But, a lot of the novel seemed herky jerky, I think because so much of the story was told to the reader, not shown, and some of the things were told to us over and over. (I get it, there's spotty cell reception, except, that never really fed into the thriller. So, if it's set up that there's spotty cell reception, where's the big scene where cell reception is an unwavering need and it's not there, or, the opposite, it is there and it seems like a blessed miracle that it is and just in time...)

I was also never quite on board with the Kelly/Josie relationship (or for that matter, the Barb/Kelly one). Again, there seemed like so much talking about everything, but, not a ton of feeling stuff.

I received this book via Netgalley thanks to Bold Strokes Books.

I have had the privilege to review this book before it has been released to the public. I very much enjoyed reading Edge of Awareness written by C.A. Popovich. It is a laid back book that you would enjoy to curl up and relax with. The characters are very well developed as is the book. The story takes place in Michigan with the two main characters being Danna and Maria. Danna runs a grooming school for animals that her mother owns. Danna is a lesbian who has been out as far back as she can remember. Running the school takes up a lot of her time but she has not been in a actual relationship since high school and would really like to settle down with someone not just saturday night flings she meets at the bar. Maria is going through her third divorce. She grew up in a religious family and religion is a large part of her life including singing in a church choir. Maria also owns a hair salon. I like the coincidence that maria does human hair and Danna does animals. Danna and Maria meet when Maria brings her dog Frankie into the grooming school to get his nails clipped. I do not want to give away too much. Sparks do fly between them but Maria has never even thought about women before and is not sure what she is feeling or how it fits into her religious life. Is Danna even willing to risk getting hurt by a straight woman if she gets the opportunity? Will there just be a friendship between them? This is very much a self discovery book for most of the characters in it. I hope you take the time to read it.
(I received this book through NetGalley for an honest review)

I found the story to be slow. I wanted to like it based on the description, but found it took far too long in the story before the characters got even slightly involved. Not a book I would read again

I'm really not sure what to think about this book. It was... not capitvating. As I already said, I'm no fan of books that start with someone shooting at something just for fun, but I didn't just have a bad start with this book, it simply didn't get better. C.A. Popovich's style is very descriptive and detailed but I felt like the plot itself somehow got lost in all those details. I didn't care for a single part of this story. Not for the plot - as far as there was any distinctive plot at all - and also not for the characters. I just didn't care. And that's just not good, reading a romance and not caring about what happens to the characters simply doesn't match. Also there was way to much drama for my taste, it just seemed overdone.… (plus d'informations)
