Cliche (and somewhere between "bad" and "mediocre") post-apocalypse book of the EMP subgenre. All the normal flaws (bad characters, dumb and implausible plot, writing which focuses on irrelevant technical details), combined with a deep misunderstanding of how EMP would affect a commercial airliner (one of the key elements of the story is that two planes crash, one containing the protagonist's daughter, the other crashing into the protagonist's place of work) -- EMP doesn't cause jet turbines to suddenly stop working, and civilian airliners have a moderate degree of EMP resistance as well as backup control in the event of electrical failue.

Lots of plot holes -- EMP being instantly taken as a military attack, basically no redeeming value other than a nice dog in the story.

This 4th installment focuses on Kate and where she was when the lights went out. She meets up with a Border Patrol agent, Nico, who instantly falls for her prior to leaving on a dangerous mission, Kate plays hard to get. When the EMP strikes, Nico's partner is killed when his helicopter crashes and he rescues a pilot who ejects from his jet prior to crashing. Both have a difficult time getting back to the Alamo. When they do return, gangs have taken over the larger hotels and war erupts. Nico, Kate, and a handful of motel guests take on all comers at the Alamo.

One final book left in the series and I'm looking forward to seeing how this all wraps up. Great job Mr. Pike.

Book 3, Unknown World by Chris Pike continues where book 2 left off. Chris Chandler and Amanda Hardy are new characters from book 2 and Dillon's farm seems to be faring well after rebuilding during the last several months. Therefore, it was now time for Chandler to escort Amanda to Austin, TX - as promised - to be reunited with her family (a week-long journey by horseback).

En route, the duo continues to battle people who want to take their stuff and lose one of their horses in a fight. A new twist was their spending time at a lodge where 2 silver dollars bought them each a hot meal and bath. The food was fantastic and filling, and Amanda was just beginning her bath when strange things started happening.

They eventually reach Chandler's parents' farm and settle in when Amanda is kidnapped by a former lover. The family, with the help of locals, formulate a plan to rescue her. They are outnumbered and have to assault the tower in Austin - made famous by a sniper in the 60's. Will they succeed? Who will move on to book 4?

I did find some typos and other errors in the story, the editing on this installment wasn't quite up to par as the previous two books. Onward to #4!

I enjoyed reading book 2 (Uncertain World) in the EMP Survivor series just as much as book 1. With everything that happens to Dillon in this story, it's hard to believe that he's still able to function after such a short period of time. Readers will learn the name of Holly & Cole's baby, and finally, get to witness the final confrontation between Cole and his followers vs. everybody else. New characters have joined the pack and the dog gets a couple of chapters of his own after getting lost. When I finished, I immediately purchased book 3 to see how the story continues. Great series so far.… (plus d'informations)
