I was hoping this book would tell more of the history of garbage in Chicago, but this is covered only very briefly. The bulk of the book deals with recycling programs in the 1960s and 1990s, comparing non-profit recyclers to corporate schemes. The second half of the book became repetitive with worrisome hand-wringing over the dirtiness of the recycling economy, as if we expected waste handling to be a perfect environmentally-correct solution to consumerism.
