- (Born 1901, Cape Town ) Editor and literary critic. Partridge was Professor of English at the University of the Witwatersrand and general editor of Purnell's 'ELISA' series. He is the author of works of literary criticism entitled English literature in South Africa (1950), Landmarks in the History of English Scholarship 1500-1970 (1972), Readings in South African English prose (1959), The Language of Renaissance Poetry (1971), The Foundations of English criticism (1972) and The Language of Modern Poetry: Yeats, Eliot, and Auden (1976). Partridge also edited Lives, Letters and Diaries (1971), Folklore of Southern Africa (1973) and Scenes from South African Life (1969). Partridge is the author of numerous articles of literary criticism including 'The Condition of South African English Literature' which appeared in Standpunte in 1950. (He seems to have still been alive in the 1970s but is surely gone by now {2014} -- seems to have ceased publishing by 1980 when he would have been 79.)
