History and old house geeks arise! This book will encourage anyone to see how history affects ordinary and extraordinary building construction and how the local environment affects construction issues. First one should learn about these basics, and then begin to explore the learning opportunities that are necessary prior to tackling the actual issues of restoration. Prior to the second World War, homes and commercial buildings were designed to last as long as possible. While many of these buildings are viewed as inconvenient, they reflect the realities of their time - no need for closets, no community water or sewer lines, electrical or other current needs. And to those who boast that all progress is marvelous, the author quietly says *asbestos*. The need to assess the building you hope to restore before you begin is not just for obvious issues, but also for the less visible problems caused by neglect or haphazard prior *rehab attempts*.
Excellent book!
