I was supposed to be reading chapters 1 and 5 and skimming chapter 4 for my course, but have been defeated. I was briefly interested in the sub-sections on the lives of costermongers, and I am heartened by Mayhew's realization that the best way to improve the 'morality' of the poor is not to give them tracts they can't read. But... then I was bored and got bogged down in the rest. Hopefully the course materials will bring this to life. I understand it was initially published section by section and that would make it more readable.… (plus d'informations)

This excellent reference book covers most aspects of the Tudor period. It gives brief year-by-year chronologies of the five Tudor reigns, thumbnail biographies of important people, chronologies of events in religion, education, Parliament and local government, tables of who held what offices and titles, a large glossary, an extensive bibliography, genealogical charts, maps of England and Ireland, and much else. Fills the niche left by Chris Cook's "English Historical Facts: 1485-1603," now out of print.… (plus d'informations)

This is an outstanding book! She does a great job cataloguing the various interpretations of the English Reformation, from its inception to the 80's. Highly, highly recommended.
