This third book in the (main) series is a combination of creature feature and slice of life. New plot strands become apparent, and I guess they’ll be expanded on in a later book. Somehow, The Resplendent Throne felt more as if it was treading water (minor spoiler: no pun intended :p ) than the previous two books. We meet new characters, learn a bit about the older ones and there’s some development of their relationships.

Overall, a fun read if a bit static, but fits well with the LitRPG style.… (plus d'informations)

Since I’m still in a LitRPG mood, I picked up this sequel with some curiosity as to what happens next. It’s essentially more of the same as Book 1. We see further community building with rather heavy-handed messaging about the merits of working for the common good rather than being maniacally villianous. I continued to enjoy how the LitRPG elements were handled—not too much crunch, but not merely cosmetic either.

Overall, an entertaining and easy-read sequel.

I’ve been in a LitRPG mood lately, and so tried out several in the subgenre. This one really hit the spot for me. I think it was largely due to the Scottish setting, and protagonist/narrator Calum being adult rather than a teenager. He was thoughtful in his planning and decision-making. Not always “right”, I suppose, but not careless or trusting overmuch to luck. I enjoyed seeing how he and his friends (and even enemies!) got to grips with the new powers bestowed upon the whole world.

The prose was tidy, and I noticed just a couple of typos. I enjoyed the touches of humour. The major characters were distinct and consistent, and nobody ended up playing Party Idiot just for the sake of drama.

The story progression is fairly linear. The book ends with a pause rather than a resolution. I didn’t find this as dissatisfying as I would with a more conventional book because of the nature of the quest/storyline.
