Richard Nunns was born in 1945 in Napier, New Zealand. He spent most of his career as a high-school English teacher. For many years he performed and played on traditional Maori instruments with Hirini Melbourne. Over the last decade he has played and researched taongo puoro full-time, giving a huge afficher plus number of traditional performances and presentations all over the world, while also performing with taonga puoro in many other non-traditional situations, including free jazz and in the classical world, most notably with the New Zealand String Quartet. He is regarded as the world's foremost authority on Maori instruments. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his work, including an Arts Foundation Laureate, and an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Victoria University. In 2009, he and Fellow musician Hirini Melbourne were inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame. He and Allan Thomas are the authors of Te Ara Puoro: A Journey into the World of Maori Music.
