This is an extraordinarily subtle and artful collection that constitutes a sort of portrait of American life in the early postwar period. A glorious collection of photographs by American studio photographers outside the studio throughout the middle half of the twentieth century. Some of the images have insightful commentary from the editor, her friends, and some of the subjects themselves. Although each picture stands on its own merits, I would have enjoyed even more commentaries.

Survey of photography that documents a different aspect of death (violence, medicine, family, ritual). Each section is prefaced with a short essay by the author.
