excellent work of socio-economic history, drawing together numerous primary sources and small studies to track the position and opportunities of women in the first two hundred and fifty years of Quebec, roughly from the arrival of the filles du roi to the Rebellion of 1837. it tracks everything from diplomatic dispatches to legal documents to voting rolls to build up a picture of a very conservative but necessarily entrepreneurial society that differed substantially from the English and European norm during the same period. belongs on the shelf beside Olwen Hufton's seminal European study of the same period, The Prospect Before Her, to which it owes much in both methodology and organization.… (plus d'informations)
