Torun is in search for a human bride but the mer people have very strict rules about what type of woman is appropriate. After two fellow mer warriors leave him for dead, he finds himself on a human’s boat and recognizes Lucy as his intended bride. For him, it’s love at first sight. For Lucy, she’s sexually drawn to him but doesn’t believe they can be together. Though he tells her the truth about himself, she thinks he’s delusional but promises to help him save his native tribe (of humans, she believes) after he promises to take her to the source of the Sea Opals.
I understood the beginning of the book but I became confused after Torun took Lucy to the underwater cave. When he telepathically spoke to her, she seemed able to understand him even though she hadn’t drank the special elixir yet. Once she finally believed that mermen are real, she totally accepts it without shock or surprise. After they were exiled, they decided to stay on land when they could’ve returned as the rulers of Sireno. Why didn’t they return? Why did so many mer warriors still want to kill them after Lucy proved herself a legitimate queen (wife) to Torun? None of this made sense to me but maybe I missed something.
I received an ARC of the book through a newsletter subscription and I’m not sure how different the finalized copy is. In my edition, there’s a few missing words and punctuation errors. I hope that’s fixed in the final copy. Other than my confusion with a few plotlines, I thought the H/h were likable characters. Torun was righteous, determined, and devoted to Lucy. She loved him just as much and, through his acceptance of her, she started to believe in her own worth again.
The story ends on a HEA but the epilogue is only available if you sign up for the author’s newsletter. I don’t understand why some authors do that. Since I’m subscribed, I downloaded the epilogue and it makes the HEA even sweeter.
