During the 1950s and 1960s the CIA organized a series of research programmes in mind control, using ordinary people as guinea pigs. None of the programmes were as terrible as those of Dr. Ewen Cameron. He performed many brainwashing experiments on his patients, mostly women, who came to him with minor symptoms and complaints of post-partum depression.

This is an older book, 1994, which I picked up on a sale table. It is an excellent thriller based on true events, the research during the 50's and 60's by the CIA to accomplish mind control. They used ordinary citizens without their consent or knowledge. Canada shares some blame here. The most advanced and gruesome experiments were carried out in Montreal at the Allan Memorial Institute by a certain sadistic psychiatrist. The Canadian government cooperated and knew of the research.

The story is centred on a young woman journalist who tries to unravel what happened to her mother at that hospital. Her mother was almost destroyed and the childhood of her daughter and her son shattered. The family itself was shattered and divided. A determined young woman helps her mother unlock the memories and finds horror. She assists a team of US lawyers who are pursuing a class action aginst the CIA. Ultimately apologies are issued by the Canadian and American government.
I couldn't stop reading it and plowed through it in a day.
