Lisa inherits a failing inn, one that is deeply in debt and in need of repairs. But it is the legacy of her deceased parents and a part of the small town, so she desperately wants to save it. Into the midst of this turmoil walks Noah, a writer suffering from writer’s block. He is worried that he will not be able to repeat the success of his first novel. He seeks to hide and write, and hopes this quiet inn will supply the seclusion and inspiration he needs. Lisa is just glad to have a room occupied and some company. But past lovers threaten both of these two new friends even as their relationship moves to a deeper level. Misunderstandings and poor judgment threaten to break this bond, and indeed, it seems like there is no hope for a future together. This author does a good job of bringing his characters to life. They are flawed, which makes them seem more real. They have problems that have no easy solutions. They make bad decisions, and their explanations cannot always erase the pain they caused. Yet there is hope and maybe a silver lining in the cloud that hangs over them. It’s a sweet and clean romance, entertaining and enjoyable.

Two shattered lives come together in this sweet romance. Emma is devastated when her husband leaves her for a younger woman. Luke is trying to cope with the death of his wife and reconnect with his teenage son who is still grieving for his mother. The son resents his father for spending more time working than being with his family. Each of these damaged people is seeking a new beginning, and they find it in Hadley Cove. The unlikely being that brings these two unhappy souls together is a lost—and found—dog. This story is a clean and sweet romance, but it is more than that. The story deals with the broken relationship of a father and son, a son who is often in trouble at school and is filled with anger towards everyone. The characters are well depicted and show growth as the story develops. The author does a good job of showing how healing and redemption is possible, and second chances are always there, if you only look for them.

The accounts are recalled from the last two decades whenever a dog has helped make a day go better. When things go wrong, there's a new member of the family; but when things go right, there's a loss. This is an extremely short memoir.
