First published in Italy in 1956, Bruno Munari'sIn the Darkness of the Night tells the tale of an interconnected, intimate yet expansive journey across three settings--in the darkness, through a meadow, and into a mysterious cave--through a spellbinding combination of paper stocks, transparencies, cutouts, and simple but lively characters.

The "book" originated in 1969 as a gift (the first edition of 250 copies was never for sale). The theme of “faces” so dear to Munari here turns almost into a game played with the eyes and the different ways of seeing things: “…mix up drawings, change the colour of the eyes, help us to see things through other people’s eyes…”. Bruno Munari suggests how to use the 25 loose colored pages, all with eye holes.

Bruno Munari was among the most inspirational designers of all time, described by Picasso as 'the new Leonardo'. Munari insisted that design be beautiful, functional and accessible, and this enlightening and highly entertaining book sets out his ideas about visual, graphic and industrial design and the role it plays in the objects we use everyday. Lamps, road signs, typography, posters, children's books, advertising, cars and chairs - these are just some of the subjects to which he turns his illuminating gaze.

Munari: "In 1945 my son was 5 and I wanted to buy books for him. But I couldn’t find anything, according to me, that would suit a 5-years old kid. (...) So I started to invent books with very simple stories. (...) I used to show them to my son, he was the best judge I could imagine, because I wanted to check that everything was working well. I didn’t want a book that would be wrong. (...) And then Mondadori saw these projects and he wanted to publish them.”

Fantasia, invenzione, creatività e immaginazione, nelle comunicazioni visive. È possibile capire come funzionano queste facoltà umane?

Bruno Munari (Milano, 1907-1998). A vent'anni incontra Marinetti, Prampolini e i futuristi della cosiddetta seconda ondata. E nelle mostre futuriste potrà esporre dipinti concreti e macchine inutili, cose rifiutate dalle

Short, simple, delightful. No more than the title says. It's about drawing a tree.

A quote

‘Copying nature’ is one thing and understanding nature is another. Copying nature can be simply a form of manual dexterity that does not help us to understand, for it shows us things just as we are accustomed to seeing them. But studying the structures of nature, observing the evolution of forms, can give everyone a better understanding of the world we live in.

It's a gem!

This is a brilliant book. It is short and not an easy read. It is a book that does need to be read carefully, and picked up again from time to time.

Bruno clearly shows how design can be used as art, and he takes you through the initial design process, and then through applications and critiques with care.

The writing style is lucid, and clear. He also debunks many myths. What I like, is the complete lack of any pomposity in his writing, and the fact that through his book, I started to look at art and design with new eyes

We loved this book as a kid and took it out of our local library. When I grew up, I tracked it down and bought the reprint edition. As an adult, I find it odd, but as a kid, it was mysterious, unusual and fun.½

The beautiful illustrations by Bruno Munari make this an exceptional ABC book. Each alphabet is allotted two pages most of the time and showcase beautiful water color like pictures with different types of details.

A poetic, often humorous look at a zoo. Definitely will provoke kids to ask questions and learn some about the different animals that live in the zoo.
