All Together Now!

Consigliatissimo.… (plus d'informations)

I'm a Beatles freak, and I loved the idea of this.

Yes, it was perfectly drawn, yes, it had the four Beatles at their quippy best, yes, it was faithful.

But for all that, it didn't quite land for me. Likely because you simply can't have the Beatles songs in a graphic novel.

Overall, while decent, it felt a touch thin.

The first story is pretty ingenious, but the real gem is the second story, set in the Looney Universe rather than the DC one. Just hilarious.

This is a graphic novel adaptation of everyone’s favourite acid-trippy Beatles cartoon. It follows the movie closely, minus the songs and some very minor elements that only weirdos like me would notice (such as the policeman attempting to call a cat when Ringo and the Yellow Submarine run by). The art is brilliant, an excellent reproduction of the movie. There’s also a teensy bit of narration and extra dialogue to move things along.

The only thing that didn’t quite work for me was the constant interjecting of Beatles’ names into the dialogue where there wasn’t any in the movie. “Ringo, there’s a school of whales.” “John, they look a bit old for school.” “University then.” “University of whales. Look like dropouts to me.” I wasn’t sure if it was necessary—of course, to me, it isn’t necessary because I’ve seen the movie several dozen times and know who’s talking. But perhaps someone who hasn’t seen the movie would find that helpful.

I’d definitely recommend this for the gorgeous artwork and the faithful rendering of the movie on the page. I borrowed this from the library but would consider getting my own copy.
