Because this is a book of love letters to a dead author, it is a difficult read, as well as sometimes overwhelming. And there is significant repetition of some of the thoughts, because Octavia Butler was so important to so many people who went on to become writers of science fiction and fantasy; many of those journeys are thematically similar.

And I say love letters rather than fan letters or anything else, because they are so much more than fan letters. They talk of the abiding change that Butler made in the lives of so many people by being not only an amazing writer, but someone who had faith in the writing of others, and lifted people up.

It isn't a five star read for me because I did find it repetitive and at times I've put it down for weeks on end. And as such I think I missed what it might have been in aggregate, with all those threads coming together to give shape to the influence that Butler continues to have.

I’m usually not that fond of a circus setting but I fell in love with this traveling circus in India and the trapeze artist Binu. While we also get a bit of background about the devadasi customs and the main conflict in the story is kind of a damsel in distress subplot, the important theme here is that of freedom, friendship and love and I thought it was beautifully written.

My experience was not proving helpful here.

Lines of Growth, Lines of Passage by Marissa Lingen was SO. GOOD. Tree magic and iceberg giants?! Amazing. I now want a longer novel that goes into this magical world!

And then there was an arm around my waist, holding me upright again, there was a hand wiping dust, blood, and tears from my eyes. It was Shehzad Marid—ever loving, ever loyal, always on my side in my hour of need.

This was a really good short story about a trapeze master and his jinni.
