Il giovane soldato John "Yo Yo" Yossarian, bombardiere dell'United States Army Air Forces durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, è furioso perché l'esercito continua ad aumentare le missioni necessarie prima del congedo di servizio. Tenta, quindi, in tutti i modi di evitare le missioni spacciandosi addirittura per pazzo, ma scopre l'esistenza di una legge militare sinistra e allo stesso tempo buffa che specifica che un uomo che vuole evitare le missioni non può considerarsi pazzo in quanto è razionalmente giusto aver paura per la propria vita e sicurezza; al contrario potrebbe essere dichiarato pazzo se volesse affrontare le missioni spontaneamente. A teenager moves in with his bank-robbing uncles.

Unpleasant people being unpleasant to each other. It's well made and fairly original - I just don't like this kind of movie (the humorless, cynical crime film) enough to like one that's anything less than amazing. You get a sense of some of these guys being really interesting characters, but they never really come through clearly. No one has any background or motivation beyond what's necessary for the plot. The protagonist, meanwhile, is hardly even a character at all. If the movie didn't start with a voice-over by him, you probably couldn't tell he's supposed to be the protagonist.
