- Hanny Michaelis was born to a Jewish family in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She began writing poetry as a small child. Shad just completed her high school exams when she and her parents Alfred Michaelis and Gonda Sara Swaab had to go into hiding in different locations during the Nazi Occupation of Holland in World War II. In 1943, her parents were caught and deported to the death camp at Sobibór. Hanny survived in hiding, and returned to Amsterdam at the end of the war. She worked for many years for the arts affairs department of the city of Amsterdam.
In 1948, she married Gerard Kornelis van het Reve, a writer; they separated in 1959. She made her literary debut in 1949 with the poetry collection Klein voorspel (Little Interlude). It was followed by five more volumes of poetry. In 2011, a completely revised and expanded edition of her body of work, Collected Poems (originally published in 1996), appeared with 30 new poems. She received both the Anna Bijnsprijs and the Sjoerd Leiker Prizes in 1995 for her lifetime of work. In 2002, she published her memoir, The Past, and her wartime diaries appeared in two parts: Springless Spring: War Diary 1940-1942 and The World Where I Stand Outside: 1943-1945.
