Diane Keaton is excellent as a middle-aged divorced and very successful playwright. She has a good relationship with her daughter Marin (Amanda Peet), who has brought her considerably older 'boyfriend' Harry - Jack Nicholson - to stay. And since I find all Jack Nicholson's characters to be sleazy, unattractive and untrustworthy, I found the storyline slightly disturbing,

There's humour, some of it slapstick, some of it involving partial nudity, and we did smile a few times. There are one or two thought-provoking moments, too, and the pace is good; I was absorbed in the story, and irritated by the ending which suggests the characters got right under my skin. Rated 15 but unlikely to be of interest to teens anyway.

A middle-aged woman falls in love with her daughter's elderly boyfriend.

2/4 (Indifferent)

Dumb, frustrating, and absurdly long.

A thoroughly enjoyable and sentimental Christmas rom-com, involving cultural differences, loneliness, attraction, and more. Some genuinely amusing moments, some quite poignant, and an entirely satisfactory, if somewhat contrived ending.

Rated 12A, and unlikely to be of interest to anyone under the age of at least fifteen or more. But highly recommended to older teens or adults who want a bit of light romance with some great acting from big names, and a feel-good overall theme.

A man doesn't like paying for his daughter's wedding.

1/4 (Bad)

This version at least tips you off with the casting that it's meant to be a comedy, which gives it a leg up on the original.

Identical twins Annie and Hallie, separated at birth and each raised by one of their biological parents, later discover each other for the first time at summer camp and make a plan to bring their wayward parents back together.
Rated PG for some mild mischief

A very enjoyable romantic comedy, made all the better by Steve Martin's superb sense of comic timing, and his expressive face. He plays the hapless George, concerned about the passing of time, and as ever deeply concerned with all his family members. Diane Keaton is a great foil to him as his wife Nina.

Good pace, some laugh-aloud moments, and some poignancy too, particularly to those of us who are empty nesters and/or long-distance grandparents. Best to be seen after the first 'Father of the Bride' film.

A brilliantly made light-hearted film with Steve Martin in the title role, Diane Keaton as his wife, and Kimberly Williams as their daughter. It's a remake of a much older film which I saw a long time ago, but I enjoyed this version very much both times I've seen it.

The bulk of the story involves the wedding preparation, which becomes more and more elaborate and increasingly expensive - organised by the strange but talented 'Franck' (Martin Short).

Lots of humour, much of it due to expressions and body language with brilliant timing. But there's also quite a poignant thread underlying, as the 'father of the bride' bemoans his daughter growing up so fast and moving out.

Highly recommended if you like romantic comedies with the emphasis on the comedy, and want a light evening's relaxation.

A wonderful story about two strangers on different continents trading places for vacation. Of course the movie is about a love interest but you are really pulling for the couples. Highly recommended.½

Two unhappily-single women swap houses.

2/4 (Indifferent).

It's two movies - one is okay, one is bad. Even if they were both good, I still probably wouldn't want to watch them both simultaneously.½

J.C Wiatt (Keaton) thinks she has it all together. She's on the road to certain success, so when an adorable baby girl comes into her life by way of distant cousin's will--she is soon forced out of the fast track by a conniving colleague and a bigoted boss. But this lady won't stay down for long. She'll prove to the world that a woman can have it all--and on her own terms, too!. i hr 50 minutes

Meyers is one of my favorite directors. Nicholson and Keaton made an interesting duo. I'm not sure if they clicked or not.

From the box: Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt light up the screen in this winning comedy about a man who thins he's God's gift to women - until he hears what they're really thinking.

Gibson plays Nick Marshall, a swinging bachelor scaling the corporate ladder of one of Chicago's hottest ad agencies. But Nick's fast-track success is derailed when the agency overlooks him and hires beautiful Darcy McGuire (Helen Hunt) as the new creative director. As Nick's prospects begin to dim, he is jolted by a freak accident that leaves him with an extraordinary ability: he can hear what women thing - and want!

Using his newfound gift to his advantage, Nick schemes to undermine Darcy by listening to her thoughts and stealing her ideas until something happens that he didn't account for - he hears his own inner voice...and realizes he's in love. Co-starring Marisa Tomei, What Women Want is "a laugh-out-loud celebration of the sexes."
