A series of the first appearances of "Brenda Starr", a truly wretched girl reporter strip that began as a comic book newspaper insert in 1940. I thought there would be some articles about the impact of the comic book code on the fledgling comic book (and newspaper strip) industry. But instead we have a short introduction by Ron Goulart, and then several of the earliest Brenda Starr stories, accompanied by a few other stories that originally accompanied Brenda in the inserts. If anything, Dale Messick's writing and art are even worse than her later comic strip work. The first year of "Brenda Starr", which has always been one of the worst strips going as far as writing and artwork - even after the death of her creator. This is the first year of the strip from 1940, along with an interview with Dale Messick and a critique of the strip. Its only redeeming factor was the unheard of leading lady for an adventure strip of the time, but that is negated by the "feminine weaknesses" that Starr often exhibits. A real mess of a strip.

This collection is for some insane reason devoted to the execrable "Brenda Starr" strip, which has always been the worsr written and drawn popular strip I am aware of. The only redeeming factor is a slight historical interest in the first episode of this embarassingly bad strip (1940 and 1941 strips reprinted here).

The second collection of this insipid strip which inexplicably continues today, these being from the 1940's. "Brenda Starr" is the most gawdawful syndicated strip I know of. I keep these books for historical interest.
