A workbook from the prolific Dr Phil who provides various strategies to improve your life. Encourages readers to identify goals and work towards them. It is successful, but only if readers actually complete the exercises.

A good diet book to read for motivation tips. Does not have a distinct exercise or diet plan. Mainly deals with emotions and thoughts. Overall, a very good diet book to read. Dr. Phil has a no-nonsense attitude, and I like that very much about this book!

A special thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a solid 2.5 out of 5 for me. There was some really good information here, but completely bogged down by the Dr. Phil-isms, but I guess that's why people are going to buy this book. He has some great tips, he breaks things down into more palatable sections, but there is nothing new here that hasn't been discussed in other books that are more straight-forward.

This book is a solid 4 stars based on content alone since I haven’t completed the weight loss plan yet. What I love most about this book is that Dr. Phil McGraw focuses a lot on correcting mind and behavior issues that prevent people from reaching their weight loss goals in addition to social, environmental and nutritional issues. This is where most diet books fail because they don’t address all areas that cause us to gain weight and finally, somebody got it right.

He also addresses all of the triggers that cause me to cheat on my weight loss plan (there are seven) and all of the different types of hunger that I experience — physical, mind (phantom), habit and trigger hunger. He has techniques to deal with all of these issues.

He’s already corrected a few mistakes I’ve made in the past. One mistake is regarding breaking bad habits. He says you don’t just break a bad habit. You have to replace one behavior with a new one that’s healthy and incompatible with the old habit. I spent so much time in the past just trying to break a bad habit without replacing it and then wondering why I was struggling. Two, he talks a lot about controlling your thoughts. This is a big issue if you're an emotional eater like me.

My weight loss issue is body composition, not necessarily weight, but Dr. Phil McGraw completely understands me. He even says that body composition is critical.

There are three phases of the diet with phases one and two lasting five days each and phase three lasting twenty days. The food selection for phase one is limited to 20 foods, but fortunately it’s only for five days. The purpose is to reset your taste buds and to learn to appreciate the natural taste of foods since we’re all so addicted to the taste of fat, salt and sugar.

If you enjoy learning about the geeky science behind weight loss, you’ll love this book. He gets into detail about the types of thermogenesis.

I’m a firm believer in using visualization to achieve my goals and Dr. Phil McGraw prescribes to the same belief.

He addresses food addiction and giving in to food cues if you suffer from this as I do.

There are short writing assignments in this book along with taking photos of yourself and taking measurements. You’ll be looking at all areas of your life to achieve your weight loss goals, not just what you eat, how much and what exercises you do.

Speaking of exercise, I love his high intensity resistance training workout. He wants you to complete it in 30 – 45 minutes. I followed it up with 20 minutes of high intensity interval training and afterwards, I felt amazing.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight, get in better shape and correct any behavioral issues that have held you back in the past. Give this book a try. It’s worth reading.

Finished the book but still have not started the diet. It sounds good and there are plenty of yummy sounding recipes and the whole plan seems pretty doable.

There are many self help diet books on the market and all say the same thing in essence. Eat less, exercise more.
This is no exception.
I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher Bird Street Books via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review.

Dr Phil is the no nonsense straight shooting guy, we have learned to love from his TV shows. In this book he is able to get that same message across in a very direct yet encouraging manner. Totally readable and something there for any teen to adult to learn from. His underlying christian spirit also comes through his writings, which is something I like.

The 20/20 Diet by Dr Phil McGraw. This is another in a long series of diet books I have read. This book combines Dr Phil’s homespun psychology with recent advances in nutrition science and a program of high intensity interval training to achieve the desired goal of weight loss. The logic of the book is flawless. Diets fail because they either are too restrictive, too impractical, too boring, and they fail to deal with temptations and plateaus. The book deals with most of these flaws by restricting the dieter to 20 foods that increases the bodies metabolism. McGraw uses the foods in various recipes to keep the dieter on track. Dr McGraw lists several high intensity exercises . He directs the reader to obtain a doctor’s advice before the start of rigorous training. As a whole I thought the diet program was reasonable. It is not however perfect by Dr McGraw’s own standards. There are no unusual foods among the 20 ingredients Dr McGraw has the dieter use. The exercises can be adjusted to fit any level of fitness. The recipes although simple require a lot planning. To its credit the book has, unlike other diet books I have reviewed, an extensive bibliography that support Dr McGraw’s assertions. If you chose to use this book it would be best to get from your library before you buy it.

√ Realistic & Credible

THE 20/20 DIET is a comprehensive guide to using the latest scientific research to plan your own personal strategy for success in losing weight. Dr Phil explains why other diets fail. He calls these blunders the "Seven Ugly Truths" about dieting. For example, diets often leave you feeling hungry. So guess what--you eat a lot. As another example, diets make you feel restricted in what you can eat--causing you to "rebel" against the diet.

Once we understand WHY diets don't usually work, we can use the latest scientific studies to help chart our own program. The 20/20 Plan is a combination of sensible exercise with some very special foods--Dr Phil calls these the "20/20" foods.

The foods in the 20/20 Diet are (naturally) called "20/20 Foods." They are selected because they tend to increase your metabolism--that's called the body's "thermogenesis." Secondly, these foods tend to "help you feel fuller when you eat them so that you feel satisfied." Finally, these foods have a "time-release" effect. That is, the full feeling lasts a longer time than with other foods.

The 20/20 Diet plan is actually in three Phases:

PHASE I THE 5 DAY BOOST: Allow your body to adjust to the new dietary balance. This gets you going in the right direction, and is mostly a learning phase, so you can better understand your body's signals about hunger versus habit.

PHASE II THE 5 DAY SUSTAIN: Builds on the success of the first phase by adding some more 20/20 foods to the mix. This phase also emphasizes the "30-Second Burn Burst" exercise program.

PHASE III THE 20 DAY ATTAIN: In this phase your goal is to maintain the steady weight loss, and even add some dining out occasions. There are more foods to choose from.

Besides the detailed diet plans, there are tons of excellent, inspiring ideas in this book to help you get started, and keep you on track. Here are some:

♦ Dr Phil points out that being overweight is not because you use food normally--it's because you MISUSE food: "You're going to have top stop using food for anything other than nutrition.

♦ One key to the 20/20 diet is to increase your metabolism. Naturally, your body will use energy just through normal activity, but also, you can exercise. Thirdly, your diet can help increase your metabolism. Picking certain foods will tend to increase your metabolism.

♦ Dr Phil notes that losing weight is about changing behavior. That requires that you change the way you think about yourself--and specifically, how you think about losing weight. He suggests a simple way to give positive affirmation to yourself: "You've got to decide, and really believe, that you can be good at losing weight."

♦ There are tons more tips from Dr Phil. In one section called, "Extinguish Your Fake Hunger," he suggests having a cup of water before you start reaching for something to eat. That's because we oftentimes confuse being thirsty with being hungry. Here's another interesting fact: Dr Phil points out that one study showed that drinking more water actually increases your metabolism.

√ In summary, THE 20/20 DIET is an inspiring, credible book. The book is nicely organized, and easy to read. To make your planning easier extensive, appendices list a large number of food items that you can pick up at the grocery store. These are the "20/20 foods" that Dr Phil wants you to emphasize. There is also an extensive reference section at the end to support the ideas presented here.

This book had some good advice on how to stand your ground and what you should be looking out for and be aware of to protect yourself from what Dr. Phil refers to as BAITERs. (backstabbers, abusers, imposters, takers, exploiters, reckless).

This book actually gave me some good advice on dealing with loss. I only wish that I had found it earlier. I would recommend everyone read this book because the advise it gives could help you through any number of issues you may or will experience.

I got this as an ebook from my sister. It took me quite a while to read it as I did not find it that interesting. Not a big fan of the esteemed Dr. to begin with, I view him as the pop cultural McDonald's of psychology essentially brought to the stage by Oprah. Dr. Phil's central theme in the book is there are a lot of folks out there in the workplace, or elsewhere who are conspiring to bring you down in some way. So he sets up awareness's and strategies to thwart their efforts. The latter part of the book deals with your children and how to deal with them and help them. I skipped that because I don't have kids. He also talks about some other factors that can enhance your life but I could not tell you one I remember other than set yourself apart from others by showing your uniqueness. It is the type of book you need to read repetitively to get much out of it, I will pass.

I purchased my copy of Life Code: The New Rules for Winning in the Real World because after reading the blurb, it seemed like a book I would benefit from reading. I'm also a fan of Dr. Phil's. I read his other self help book, Family First, and I was not only enlightened but impressed. I've put his parenting advice to good use since reading that book. I like the way Dr. Phil not only 'tells it like it is', but I like that he is a spiritual person and it shows in his work, without being overly preachy.

In 'Life Code' Dr. Phil's main objective is to make you not only aware of the people who are out to exploit and take advantage of you, but to also make you focus on being more assertive and reaching your own goals in life.

In this book Dr. Phil calls the people who use and abuse others 'Baiters' and he says that since society has changed so much, we need to adopt a new Life Code in order to avoid being taken advantage of. Baiters is an acronym for Backstabbers, Abusers, Imposters, Takers, Exploiters, Reckless. Each of these characteristics is broken down and explained in this book. Being that he is a psychiatrist, Dr. Phil goes a bit into personality disorders, which explains some of these behaviors.

Dr. Phil says no more giving people the benefit of the doubt and no more being passive in life. One thing he says that resonated with me is that you need to view people neutrally until they prove themselves worthy of your trust. I think that's great advice.

Dr. Phil differentiates between motivated, goal oriented individuals and those who are just plain nasty and will do anything in order to get what they want, including lying and cheating.
Another thing he does that I really like is he encourages the reader to do exercises while reading, like jotting down a list of personal strengths and weaknesses as well as writing down a set of goals and a time frame in which to achieve them. The purpose of this is to take a good look at oneself and to be honest. The thing I like about the way Dr. Phil writes his books is that I feel as though he is sitting there giving me advice as I read. I find myself nodding my head in agreement or discovering some eye opening revelations.
Dr. Phil gives a set of sixteen important strategies and tactics to help you get what you want out of life.

I love that Dr. Phil is family oriented and he ends the book with advice on how to share this knowledge and insight with ones own children so that they are not victimized or taken advantage of by Baiters.

I don't like to rate self-help books, because I think these types of read either affect the reader in a good way, or not at all. It depends on each individual and their own circumstances. As for myself, I think Life Code: The New Rules for Winning in the Real World is a 5 star read. I was enlightened as I read and my eyes have been opened to certain behaviors and warning signs that I have been blind to in the past. I also discovered some tips and strategies that I will be applying to my everyday life. I found this book to be very inspiring and motivational.
Thank you Dr. Phil!

I purchased by copy of this book, this review is my honest opinion.

As I’ve said already several dozen times, I received this book via the courtesy of a GoodReads drawing. Despite that repetitious and kind consideration, I give my unfiltered feedback below.

To further the probably unnecessary preamble, I feel it relevant to note that I’m not at all the self-help Dr. Phil type. I don’t typically subscribe to the sea of “fix your life” books that are available. This isn’t, of course, because my life is perfect but I estimate that the ways in which it is imperfect are not sufficiently of concern to warrant the reading of an entire book. These things take hours to read, after all! But, in the interest of flinging my net of interests to the furthest reaches of the literary genres, I signed up for this book just, as they say when at sea, for the halibut.

So to talk about this book properly one must do so in parts. The first section, about 100 pages or so, goes on at length to describe the people in this world who are, to put it as simply as possible, just plain jerkfaces. Dr. Phil calls them ‘BAITER’s but they can be summed up as those people who abuse the system to get whatever the heck they want. The good doctor provides a list of warning signs for detecting such people and also what to do about them once you’ve found them. In general I found the whole thing edifying but also not especially practical. I know that such people exist but I was at a loss to name anyone in my immediate acquaintance whom I would term a ‘BAITER’. For someone out there, this will serve as a valuable guide.

The next functional bit, about 80 pages as I count it, amounts to life coaching. It encourages the reader to be assertive, go after what they want, gives strategies to get it but reminds them that in so doing they shouldn’t fall into the category of people described in the first section. In other words, go after what you want but not at any cost whatsoever. It’s a delicate balance and the book acknowledges and describes that balance effectively.

After global encouragement about life, there’s a helpful and specific chunk about negotiation. This is really a subheading of section two but I think it deserves special consideration since it is a process that is so ubiquitous and misunderstood. If you read nothing else in this book, read chapter 6 (this is non-negotiable; well, really it is since everything’s negotiable, but I digress).

The book closes with a section on passing along all the things you’ve learned in the previous sections to your children. It describes at a high level some of the modern nuances of parenting and how to best deal with these given that the world has changed considerably since we were young-uns (as Dr. Phil might put it).

In summation, this isn’t generally the sort of book I’d normally go for but it has something to say to just about everyone. It’s not a book in which you hang on every word but somewhere in this thing you’ll find something that makes you look up, ponder, and stare briefly into the middle-distance in a thoughtful way. Organizationally the book helps with brief, topical chapters and specific quotes highlighted on each page. You’ll want to skim through to the bits that you care about, the book knows this and is organized in such a way to make that easy. One couldn’t ask for much more than that.

This is the accompanying journal to go with the book, Life Strategies. As such, it is not usable without the book, but a good tool to take the lessons in the book further.
