McCullagh's first book is a competent and well-written analysis of the first Inter-Party Government in Ireland. He analyses the historical environment in which the 1948 General Election took place and provides portraits of all of the major political players. The disparate parties that formed the Government are also examined and their desires and achievements analysed critically. He also assesses the events that ultimately led the Government to break up. Overall the book is quite a balanced account and provides good reference material for those who want to do further reading.½
