I love every book of the series that Andre Norton wrote. Why? Because each book can stand alone with out losing anything. In this novel she quietly shows how combat prejudices and change attitudes, while standing to convictions. An over arching element of many of her crafted stories is love and several of its aspects show up in this story. The good thing about a Norton story is, as you read this isn't apparent and does get in the way of a great yarn.

One theme in this novel could be redemption. That even at the end change can come. It could also be, being quick to judge can lead to ends, And being forgiving can make a world of difference. But it isn't in the theme that a great author shines. Norton paints a very human story and you become part of the characters. That is why I loved this story.

This is one of the few Norton novels I did not read originally as an youth. Then I would not have noticed the idea of slavery as it applies to pets and how we think of our furry friends. This is something that occurs often in Andre Norton's works. Lyn McConchie may have written the driving plot line but the subtle cat references are pure Norton. It was a joy to read a new Norton story and see the ideas unfold.

This is the third book in the series of Beast Master books, this one co-written by Lyn McConchie and takes place on the desert world of Arzor, following on fairly closely to the two earlier books.

Hosteen's and his new found family on the desert planet of Arzor reckon they have earned some time for peace, to grow their holdings free from alien invaders or native uprisings. As they look forward to the arrival of the Ark, a starship hold genetic samples from as much terran fauna as could be loaded before Terra had been burnt off by the invading Xic. Hosteen wanted to see if he could get mates for members of his team, and everyone was interested in seeing if meercats coudl teke over an ecological niche that was in danger of being vacated. But there was something going on in the Blue that would see the feared Nitra natives encroaching on their more civilised neighbouring Norbies who then started pushing in on Settler lands, threatening the human presence on Arzor. Hosteen and Tani most find a way of uniting their powers to find out what was causing this mass movement, and reversing its effects while keeping the three parties together.… (plus d'informations)
