Virginia Mayo, née Virginia Clara Jones, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She became a successful actress and dancer. She appeared in a series of comedy films with Danny Kaye and also co-starred in the 1946 Oscar-winning movie The Best Years of Our Lives and White Heat (1949). She was Warner Brothers' biggest box-office money-maker in the late 1940s. In her later years, she became a painter, and in 1993, wrote a children's book called Don't Forget Me, Santa Claus (Barrons Juveniles Publishers).

This is a lovely story about a girl who sees some swans on a nature outing and dreams of helping them. The watercolor illustrations are soft and tranquil in shades of dark blues, greens, and purples and convey the peaceful, reflective story. While there is text for the "waking" part of the story, the girl's dream after she returns home is told through images alone. I really appreciate that Mayo encourages care for nature through compassionate relationship between people and other living creatures. This picture book has no text. It's about a determined toddler who didn't want to be left out for Christmas. The illustrations are light and wintery. This book would be great for Christmas time and to show the children how hard they have to work to get what they want.
