this is surprisingly fresh, amusing, and easy considering its topic and point. it's a lovely tribute to her mother, and is well written and interesting. there is even some understanding, by the end, of why her mother would choose to have no medical treatment whatsoever (and only use herbs and tinctures, etc) for a totally treatable cancer. i'm a little curious if the author ever noticed her mom getting medical treatment in her life before this, because it seemed (from her perspective) to come out of nowhere, but otherwise she did a nice job of making some sense of her decision by the end. the audio book incorporates some recordings of her mother's voice as well, which is a nice touch, and makes you feel like you're actually kind of getting to know both of these people. i really liked this.
