A brief history of translations of the Hebrew Bible. The chapters in the table of contents are:the Targum, the Septuagint and the later Greek versions, ancient Christian translations, Jewish translations in the Middle Ages, the Age of the Reformation - Luther and the King James version, modern translations by Jews and Christians [the book was published in 1917], agencies for circulating the Bible, the difficulties inherent in all Bible tranlations, and the Index. Jewish history is long and interwoven with universals. It is practically the history of civilization, commencing 2000 BC and in this work concluding with the Palestinian Mandate in 1925.

Includes the story of the martyred Messiah Jew, Jesus.

Recounts in detail the intermittent but eventually systematic introduction of graven images by Roman rulers into Jewish communities - igniting Zionism. [179, 185]

While scholarly and comprehensive with such a rich tale in a single volume, it does contain significant omissions. No explanation for how Jewish communities suddenly appeared in the Caucuses and Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages. No mention of the Khazars -- a warrior people of Turkish stock who were wedged between two major 8th century world powers: Charlemagne's Holy Roman Empire knights were advancing from the West, and Muslim armies were advancing from the Persian East.
