- John Manley is an archaeologist who has excavated widely around the world, including sites including Italy, the Caribbean, Ethiopia, South Africa, Iran and Afghanistan, as well as Western Europe and the U.K. His most notable excavations have been at the Fishbourne Royal Palace (Chichester, U.K.), the probably residence of a Client or Friendly King during the Roman annexation of southern Britain, and at Jerash (Roman Gerasa) in Jordan. He was CEO of The Sussex Archaeological Society, the largest county archaeological society in the UK for 16 years. He is currently the Honorary Research Fellow of the
Society.
As well as holding a research degree in archaeology, he also has a strong interest in social anthropology and holds a PhD in that field, applying the insights of anthropology to Roman archaeology.
He is the author of numerous articles and books.
