The biography of a journalist owes a great deal to the choice of the subject. Bob Edwards was a very entertaining writer, and was sometimes compared to stephen Leacock, a contemorary humourist of note. Living in Edwardian Calgary Edwards had plenty of satirical fodder to practice on. The paper he largely wrote "The Eye Opener" was eagerly awaited by the public, though its schedule was occasionally erratic. He is credited with two epigrams ; "Booze floats more troubles than it drowns", and "A statesmanman is a dead plitician." When he passed away, the city was sunk in grief and he was sorely missed during the coming decades of Social Credit government.
Sadly the book is only available electronically at the moment....sic transit Gloria Edwards...

Grant MacEwan was a copious writer on Western Canadian topics and a very well researched one. This book on the refugee period of the Lakotah in Canada is not sensationalist and brings out the large degree of cooperation between the RCMP, settlers, and this group of Sioux. It is well worth reading, especially providing an alternative view of White-First Nations interaction than "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."

In most cases, getting a good education was a driving force in their lives which led to them to make major contributions to their country. Several became doctors, many started out as teachers, a few were politicians and a few more were journalists.

Some of the more famous women chronicled in these pages are Cora Hind, Emily Murphy, Emily Carr, educator, Hilda Neatby, journalist Ma Murray and conservationist Anahareo. The biographies are brief and because they are all of a similar style, seem tedious in their telling. Only when he writes about an unusual figure such as Ma Murray or Anahareo does the article rise above the norm. It is a good source of concise background on the Famous Five.… (plus d'informations)
