John Eward; Natsoulas Lucie-Smith

The Western Biennale of Art is "an attempt to bring together the artists of California" which as it goes on to describe is "increasingly recognized as a center for experiment in America art". Following Edward Lucie-Smith's introduction are the thirty two featured artists, to each of which is devoted a double page spread.

The format for each artist follows the same pattern: a paragraph or two or explanation, usually in the artist's own words, a brief bibliography, a list of exhibitions and any other relevant facts. For each artist there is also one, but occasionally two or three works shown, one at least invariable full page size.

Painting predominates the works, but also include is some photography and three dimensional work. The work is wide ranging, and there are frequently strong gay influences evident. Among the artists included are Delmas Howe, Philip Pearlstein and David Legare.

This a lavish paperback production, very large in format and with an extravagant page layout which yet manages not to distract from the full colour plates, of which there are about 47 in total.… (plus d'informations)
